The History of Bennettsville
Named after the governor of South Carolina at the time, Thomas Bennett Jr., Bennettsville was founded in 1819 on the Pee Dee River (so named after the Pee Dee Indian Tribe) and is the county seat of Marlboro County.
The area, like most in the South at the time, was heavily dependent on slave labor to run the local cotton plantations and the invention of the cotton gin contributed to the growth of very large plantations in the area. Bennettsville was occupied by Union Troops during the latter part of the Civil War.
General Sherman used the County Courthouse as his headquarters. As a result, it is one of the few county seats in the state that escaped burning and has records dating back to the Revolutionary War period.
After the civil war, the railroad brought with it an outlet for the towns cotton which helped the area grow to become one of the richest agricultural areas in all of South Carolina.
Bennettsville remains a small agricultural community of about 8,000 residents (approximately the same population as it had back in 1970).
