The History of Florence
Florence was incorporated two years after the creating of Florence County in 1888, and is the seat of the county sharing its name. General W.W. Harlee, who build his home at the intersection of the two main rail lines in the area, named the town after his daughter, Florence.
Early settlers to the area engaged in farming and timber trades, sending cotton and wood products down the Great Pee Dee River to the port at Georgetown. Florence played an important role in the Civil War and was an important supply route for the Confederacy.
Florence also housed thousands of Union POW’s in what was known as the Florence Stockade. Many of the POW’s died of their injuries and disease and were burred nearby in what would become the Florence National Cemetery.
WWII resulted significant growth for Florence, with a focus on textiles, paper, and manufacturing. Post WWII, Florence became a significant center for medical care, which also attracted the attention of medical equipment manufacturers and medical insurance companies. 2010 brought a massive downtown revitalization effort with a 600 acre area being designated as the Downtown Redevelopment District.
