The History of Greenville
Originally named Pleasantburg, it is suggested that Greenville was named after Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene when it was incorporated in 1831. Greenville supported secession for South Carolina.
Greenville provided around 2,000 soldiers to the Confederate Army and supplied the Confederate Army with food, clothing and firearms. Despite it’s support of the Confederate Army, Greenville saw no fighting or destruction from Union forces during the war.
Greenville struggled during the Great Depression with many in the textile industry being put out of work and several local universities merging out of necessity to survive.
The establishment of the Greenville Army Air Base during WWII helped the local economy out of the Great Depression rut but the city’s growth really surged after WWII with a downtown filled with stores ready to sell products to returning GI’s and their families. Unfortunately, the post-WWII growth was short lived. Like many other cities at the time, by the end of the 20th century, the flight to the suburbs and advent of large shopping mall destinations crippled the old downtown Greenville.
