North Carolina Project Spotlight
Commercial Steel Building Aerial Tour
This Spotlight features a barn style retail metal building for the folks at Big Red’s Bed & Biscuit doggy daycare and boarding facility. A 29′ x 76′ gambrel frame main building is flanked by two 16′ fully enclosed leantos.
The striking red color is accented by white wainscoting and white trim. Decorative barn style doors and custom exterior lighting add to the visual appeal of this project.
The History of High Point
Located in the Piedmont region, High Point was originally settled by mostly German immigrants and incorporated in 1859. While it’s semi-annual High Point furniture Market draws over 100,000 attendees from around the world, it is widely recognized as the furniture capital of the U.S.
The end of the Civil War brought cheap labor to the area and its location, in the center of vast hardwood forests, made High Point a natural choice for manufacturing inexpensive wood furniture for southern communities rebuilding after the war. The first furniture manufacturing company opened in 1889 under the name High Point Furniture Manufacturing Company. By the end of the century, over a dozen more furniture factories opened in High Point.
Furniture manufacturing was good to High Point with tremendous growth in the decade of the “roaring 20’s”, the Great Depression having little effect on the industry, and a post-WWII boom as returning GI’s bought homes and started families.
All good things do indeed come to and end, and so it was that globalization that started in the 1990’s began to impact domestic furniture production. China and other countries in Asia were soon producing furniture that rivaled that produced in High Point for less money.
