North Carolina Project Spotlight
Commercial Steel Building Aerial Tour
This Spotlight features a barn style retail metal building for the folks at Big Red’s Bed & Biscuit doggy daycare and boarding facility. A 29′ x 76′ gambrel frame main building is flanked by two 16′ fully enclosed leantos.
The striking red color is accented by white wainscoting and white trim. Decorative barn style doors and custom exterior lighting add to the visual appeal of this project.
The History of Lumberton
Founded by John Willis (an officer in the Revolutionary War) in 1787, with his 250 acre planation making up the original town, Lumberton was named because of its location on the Lumber River.
Lumberton is the county seat of Robeson County, aptly named after another Revolutionary War Veteran, Colonel Thomas Robeson. The Lumberton Post Office opened on January 1, 1796 with John Noyes as the first Postmaster. Initially Lumberton was just a shipping point for lumber and naval supplies traveling downriver to Georgetown SC.
The greater area around Lumberton was a frontier and a place where both white and free families of color would migrate to. The county of Robeson has a large population that claim to be Lumbee Indian, one of the larger Indian tribes in North Carolina but one that is not formally recognized by the Federal Government.
Lumberton did have a minor-league baseball team, affiliated with the Chicago Cubs, but the team was disbanded after four seasons ending in 1950. In 2010, the town earned the designation as the first “Certified Retirement Community” in North Carolina.
