The History of Orangeburg
Named after William IV, Prince of Orange (in southern France), Orangeburg was settled in the early 18th century and incorporated in 1883 and is sometimes referred to as “The Garden City”.
Known for it’s incredibly rich soil, Orangeburg was originally made up of small farms.
This changed drastically with the invention of the cotton gin which led to an explosion of growth in the area and Orangeburg became a collection of very large cotton plantations. The labor for these plantations was performed by slave labor provided by the domestic slave trade.
After the Civil War, freed slave sought education and Orangeburg is home to two historically black colleges: Claflin University and SC State University. Civil rights era tensions ripped through the city during the mid 20th century and culminated in the death of 3 and wounding of 27 college students, by police, during a protest at a local segregated bowling alley, the event would later on be known as the “Orangeburg Massacre”.
The city of Orangeburg has no shortage of historic landmarks, as well as the Edisto Memorial Gardens (famous for its rose collection), the IP Stanback Museum & Planetarium, and the annual Orangeburg Festival of Roses (celebrating it’s 50th year in 2022).
