The History of Rocky Mount
Named after the rocky mound at the falls of the Tar River, Rocky Mount was established along with its Post Office in 1816. The arrival of the first railroad in 1839 and had a significant impact on the town as it connected the area to major ports in both Virginia and Delaware.
During the Civil War, the cotton mill in Rocky Mount which had supplied the Confederates with cloth and yarn was burned down by Union forces (it was rebuilt after the war). Also after the war, there was an increase in demand for tobacco and in particular the brightleaf tobacco that was easily grown in the sandy soil found in the area.
In the decades that ended the 19th century, Rocky Mount saw its primary agricultural crop of “King Cotton”, slowly replaced by tobacco.
Rocky Mount saw an explosion of growth when the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad chose it for its headquarters and yard facilities. The influx of railroad employees increased the towns population by 2.5 times in a seven year period ending 1907. The area continued to grow through WWII and slowly diversified into manufacturing, finance, and pharmaceuticals.
The area continues to grow and was recently ranked #6 for cost of doing business in its 2018 ranking of “Best Small Places for Business and Careers”.
