The History of Sumter
Originally named “Sumterville” when incorporated in 1845, just ten years later, the named was shortened to Supter, after Revolutionary War hero and South Carolina politician General Thomas Sumter (one of the models for Mel Gibson’s character in the movie “The Patriot”).
The city of Sumter is also the seat of Sumter County and the largest city within the county. Sumter’s history can be summed up in one word: rail.
Rail played a crucial role in the Civil War in helping keep the railroads running throughout the Confederacy. After the war, Sumter grew quickly and using the network of railroads that ran through it, supplied cotton, wood, and tobacco to other areas in the south.
WWII helped to generate a new focus on textiles and manufacturing. In 1941, the Shaw Air Force Base was opened and it also helped to spur growth in the area. Today, the city is home to near 40,000 residents and many local sites on the Nation Register of Historic Places.
