The History of Tuscon
Tuscon was founded as a military fort by the Spanish and was included in the state of Sonora after Mexico gained independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821. In 1853, the United States acquired present-day southern Arizona under the Gadsden Purchase.
Tuscon actually served as the capital of the Arizona Territory from 1867 to 1877, replacing Prescott. Tuscon was the most populated city in Arizona from the territorial period through about 1920, when it was surpassed by Phoenix.
The University of Arizona was founded in 1885 as a land-grant college and located in Tuscon. The university’s Steward Observatory is one of only a few locations in the world that can cast the huge mirrors used in telescopes around the world and in space.
Today, Tuscon is home to a population of around 550,000 and relies heavily on the University of Arizona and tourism as the main sources of employment for its residents.
