The History of Yuma
Yuma was named after the Spanish word “humo”, meaning smoke, because of the smoke created by the Native Americans to help induce rain. Sometimes referred to as the gateway to California, the Colorado River narrows to around 1,000 feet in some places.
During the 1870’s Gold Rush, Yuma became known for it’s many ferry crossings which brought prospectors closer to their dream of striking it rich. In one year alone, more than 60,000 travelers passed through via the rope ferry on their way to California.
Yuma has a desert-like climate that is excruciatingly hot in the summer and very warm in the winter. Yuma is the winter vegetable capital of the world and produces over 90% of all leafy greens eating in North America during the winter. Yuma is often credited for being the sunniest place on earth.
The Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma is the largest employer in the area but the trucking industry supports a large number of jobs in the area with Yuma being between Mexico and California trucking route.
